I'm also another admirer of 'All Quiet on the Western Front', so would be interested to see this one too and find how it compares. I haven't seen enough of Margaret Sullavan's work as yet, but agree with Sam that she was excellent in 'The Shop Around the Corner'.Judyhttp://movieclassics.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2795601141833900338.post-8355397864323984462010-05-07T10:04:13.834-07:002010-05-07T10:04:13.834-07:00I've actually seen this film and THE MORTAL ST...I've actually seen this film and THE MORTAL STORM just recently, courtesy of two purchases from the Warner Archives collection, which made these long-unavailable films available on DVD. As a life-long fan of Remarque's ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT, I've always felt that this Remarque work was unjustly underestimated, and Borzage did indeed craft a memorable romantic drama here, which you have framed exceedingly well. Cinematographer Ruttenberg lensed this film beautifully, as you note. I'd agree that Borzage didn't hit the Nazis hard until THE MORTAL STORM, but another Sullavan starrer, LITTLE MAN WHAT NOW, released in 1934, may have at least equaled THREE COMRADES in the general pantheon. I do well remember your stellar post on these pages on the life and career of Sullavan, and of your long affinity for her talent. (which I do agree with). Like most, I have always loved THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER most of all among her performances.Sam Julianonoreply@blogger.com
